Singletrack Zdobnice: family trails, pumptrack and forest corners in the heart of the Orlické Mountains
Practical Information
Singletrack Zdobnice is a compact network of more than 10 km of one-way forest trails in the Orlické Mountains. It offers a pumptrack, a short training trail, the Želva climbing trail and six downhill trails from mild to medium difficulty. The main trailhead is by the fire reservoir in Zdobnice, with parking, a repair station and an e-bike charging station.
Singletrack Zdobnice is exactly the kind of place to visit when you do not want a large lift-served bikepark, but a flat cycle path along a river is no longer enough. It lies in the Orlické Mountains near the village of Zdobnice and belongs to the Czech-Polish Singletrack Glacensis project. It is compact, readable and useful for families, beginners and hobby riders who want to try forest singletrack without immediately feeling like they are at an enduro race.
The official page lists 10 km and an estimated time of 1.5 hours. In reality, it depends on how many trails you ride, how long you stay on the pumptrack, how many descents you repeat and whether you have children with you who occasionally need a biscuit, drama and then another biscuit. The main trailhead is by the fire reservoir in Zdobnice, with parking, a pumptrack, training trail, repair station and e-bike charging station.
Why go
Zdobnice is good mainly because it is progressive. First you can play on the pumptrack, then ride the short training trail, then climb Želva to Valčenka ridge and choose a downhill trail. Everything is in one compact forest above the village, so you do not have to move between three valleys and search for the rest of the family using messages like “we are by some spruce tree”.
The second advantage is the character. This is not about big jumps, tables and downhill brutality. Zdobnice is mainly playful: corners, changing terrain angles, rollers, forest passages and short downhill trails that can be combined. For beginners, it is a good school of bike handling; for more experienced riders, it is more of a pleasant warm-up and technical play.
Trails and difficulty
The base is the pumptrack by the car park. It helps riders practise bike control, pumping, cornering and body position. For children it is a great playground; for adults, a slightly ruthless reminder that physics still applies after thirty.
The training trail is 0.15 km long and is useful before riding sharper terrain. Jelení trail is 1.2 km long, descends and is officially described as a pleasant ride with mild difficulty. It is a good first option for riders who no longer feel like a giraffe on roller skates on the pumptrack.
Želva is the only climbing trail in the area and is 2.36 km long. It takes you to Valčenka ridge. The name is quite accurate: this is not where you break records, but where you climb smoothly and save your legs and mood. After the climb, several downhill options open up.
Rampušák is 2.04 km long and is the longest downhill trail with the steepest descent. Officially, it is medium difficulty. Kačenka is 1.12 km long and brings a faster descent full of turns. Zmijovka is 1.23 km long and twisty from the start, more adrenaline-filled and also medium difficulty. Pytlácký trail is 1.28 km long, faster and requires concentration. Spojovací trail is 0.65 km long, runs along Valčenka ridge towards Nad Zdobnicí and has mild difficulty.
For children and beginners
Beginners should start at the bottom. Pumptrack, training trail, Jelení and then Želva with one of the easier descents make more sense than going straight into the fastest combination. Zdobnice is family-friendly, but the official rules also say the trails are intended for mountain bikers who can handle technical off-road riding.
For children, independent braking, cornering and holding a line are essential. If a child only handles wide cycle paths, really start with the pumptrack and training trail. If they already have some forest-trail experience, Zdobnice can be an excellent first bigger singletrack experience.
Entry and facilities
According to Kudy z nudy, facilities at the main trailhead are free to use: the pumptrack, training trail, e-bike charging station and quick repair station. A voluntary contribution for operation is welcome. Do not expect a bikepass, because this is not a lift-served bikepark.
Official sources did not list bike rental directly at the trails as part of the trailhead. Bring your own bike, ideally a mountain or trail bike, and basic repair equipment. The repair station can help, but a spare tube, pump and multi-tool in your backpack are still better than a romantic forest walk with a flat rear tyre.
Operation and current status
The official text states that trails are generally open from 1 April to 30 October and any closed trails should be marked. The municipality of Zdobnice also links current information through the Singletrack Zdobnice Facebook profile and the official Singletrack Glacensis project website.
At verification I did not find a separate clear trail-status table for every Zdobnice trail. Before travelling, check current information and above all respect signs directly on the ground. After rain, wind, forestry work or maintenance, some sections may be temporarily restricted.
Safety and equipment
A helmet is essential and the official rules also recommend gloves. You do not need a downhill bike for Zdobnice, but you do need good brakes, functioning tyres and a bike suitable for off-road riding. A hardtail or regular mountain bike is enough for milder trails; a trail bike is better for faster combinations.
The biggest mistake is thinking that “downhill trail” means downhill all the way without effort. The official rules explicitly warn that a downhill trail does not mean the route leads downhill for its entire length. You still need to pedal, look ahead, keep gaps and avoid stopping behind corners.
Who it suits
Singletrack Zdobnice suits families with children, beginners, recreational bikers, hardtail riders and anyone who wants to taste singletrack in a friendly size. It is also a good first stop before longer Glacensis rides such as Suchák or the Polish loops.
It is less suitable for riders looking for long enduro stages, big jumps, a lift, a full-day bikepark or resort-style rental and service. Zdobnice is more of a forest trail playground than a large bike resort. And that is its strength.
What to watch out for
Check current information before travelling, especially after rain and outside the main season. Bring your own bike, water and basic tools. With children, start on the pumptrack and training trail, not the fast descents. And if it is your first visit, do not underestimate Želva: the climbing trail has a cute name, but your legs may have a very adult conversation with it.
