Sychrov Chateau: the Neo-Gothic Rohan gem, park and easy trip near the Bohemian Paradise

Sychrov Chateau is a Neo-Gothic pearl in the Liberec Region and an excellent trip between Turnov, Liberec and the Bohemian Paradise. It offers the Prince Kamil’s Chateau basic route, Arthur and Gabriela Apartments, a shorter Visit to Princess Adéla, Golden Treasure, a large English park with orangery, Rohan history and a link to Antonín Dvořák.

Sychrov is a chateau that brings a welcome change of pace after the castles and ruins of the Bohemian Paradise. After Kost and Trosky, where you deal with rocks, stairs, ruins and viewpoints, Sychrov gives you a Neo-Gothic residence, landscaped park, orangery, comfortable courtyards and elegant interiors. It is not a rough fortress experience. It is a cultivated Rohan world, where the mood is more salon than siege.

The chateau lies in the Liberec Region, close to the road between Turnov and Liberec. That makes it easy to reach by car, train or bus, and very easy to combine with the Bohemian Paradise. If your itinerary includes Turnov, Hrubý Rohozec, Trosky, Hruboskalsko or the Jizera Mountains, Sychrov adds aristocratic interiors, a park and a wider European story.

Why visit

Sychrov is ideal if you want a beautiful chateau without a demanding climb, but also more than a quick courtyard walk. The basic route presents the summer residence of the Rohan family from the second half of the 19th century: richly furnished rooms, representative halls, library, dining room and private apartments.

The great strength of Sychrov is the combination of interiors and park. Some chateaux work mainly inside; here the grounds matter too. After the tour, you can walk through the English park, visit the orangery area, continue to Rudolf’s viewpoint or look for the romantic Arthur’s Castle. Sychrov can be a calm morning or a half-day trip, not just a stop between two more famous places.

Tours

For a first visit, choose Prince Kamil’s Chateau, the basic route. It lasts about 50 minutes, the adult ticket costs CZK 260 and reservation is required mainly for groups. You see the representative and private Rohan interiors, including royal rooms, studies, bedrooms, library, gaming salon and large dining room. It is the best-balanced route for most visitors.

Arthur and Gabriela Apartments are a more intimate route on the second floor of the east wing. It lasts 50 minutes, costs CZK 360 and has a capacity of only 8 people, so reservation is required even for individuals. It is best for visitors who already know the basic route or want a more detailed experience.

Visit to Princess Adéla is shorter, about 25 minutes, with a uniform CZK 200 ticket. Golden Treasure is a 15-minute exhibition without guided commentary for CZK 100, focused on valuable objects from the Sychrov collections and works by František Khynl. The chateau grounds and park can be visited independently for CZK 60.

Park and grounds

The English park is one of the main reasons not to rush away. It covers 26 hectares and developed strongly under the Rohans in the 19th century. You can find long views, lawns, the orangery, water tower, Rudolf’s viewpoint, romantic Arthur’s Castle and other small park structures.

This part is worth adding even if you are mainly interested in the interiors. If you have only an hour, take the basic tour. With two or three hours, add the park. With half a day, make it a relaxed chateau visit with coffee or a pause in the orangery area.

Time needed

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the basic route, courtyard and a short break. With the park and orangery, plan 3 to 4 hours. With another route or a children’s programme, Sychrov becomes a comfortable half-day trip.

The chateau works best at a slower pace. One interior route, a walk in the park and then the next plan is a better approach than racing through the rooms.

Tickets and opening

The basic route costs CZK 260 for adults, CZK 210 for seniors, youth and disability-card holders, CZK 80 for children aged 6–17 and is free for children under 5. Arthur and Gabriela Apartments cost CZK 360. Visit to Princess Adéla costs CZK 200, Golden Treasure CZK 100 and the grounds/park CZK 60.

The basic route is open in 2026 from 1 May to 31 August daily 9:00–16:30, from 1 September to 31 October daily 9:00–15:30 and from 1 November to 20 December daily 10:00–14:00. The park has longer summer hours. Always check the exact day: in 2026 the whole area is closed from 2 to 17 May because of filming.

Transport and accessibility

By car, Sychrov is very simple. The municipal car park is right by the entrance to the honour courtyard and costs CZK 80 for cars. By train, use Sychrov station and walk about 1 km, with a short climb at the beginning. By bus, Paceřice, Rohanka or Sychrov, zámek may be useful depending on the line.

Sychrov is only partly barrier-free. Exteriors, courtyards and the park are easier to access than the interiors. The basic route requires assistance on stairs to the first floor, while Golden Treasure is on the ground floor and accessible for wheelchair users.

Dogs and children

Dogs and other animals are not allowed on tours or in the chateau grounds including the park, with the exception of assistance dogs. Leashed animals may enter only the honour courtyard. With a dog, Sychrov is therefore not an ideal main programme.

For children, the park and seasonal children’s tours work well. In summer there is a Princess Tour, and school groups have a Chateau for Children route. Smaller children usually do best with one shorter chateau experience plus outdoor time.

Dvořák and the Rohan story

Sychrov is strongly connected with the Rohan family and also with Antonín Dvořák. The composer visited Sychrov repeatedly between 1877 and 1896 through his friendship with Alois Göbl, secretary to Prince Kamil Rohan. This gives the chateau a cultural layer beyond architecture and furniture.

The Rohan story gives Sychrov a European flavour: French aristocratic roots, Czech landscape, 19th-century historicism, music and park design meet in one place.

Nearby

Sychrov combines well with Turnov, Hrubý Rohozec, Hruboskalsko, Trosky, Malá Skála, Frýdštejn, Liberec and Ještěd. For a day trip, Sychrov plus Turnov or Sychrov plus Hrubý Rohozec works nicely. For a Bohemian Paradise weekend, use Sychrov as a chateau contrast to rocks and ruins.

Practical tip

For a first visit, choose Prince Kamil’s Chateau and add the grounds with the park. If you have more time, add Golden Treasure or Visit to Princess Adéla. Save Arthur and Gabriela Apartments for a second visit or reserve them ahead because the capacity is very small.
